William Paterson

William Paterson was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, in 1926, but spent most of the first 20 years of his life in London, England. He moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1949. He has been a trade unionist since the age of 14, was elected to be a shop steward at 18, and was elected the business agent of the Painters’ Union in Calgary in 1956. He became the Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the Calgary Labour Council in 1963, a position he held for 28 years.
